2027: Peter Obi, South-East leaders meet Jonathan in Abuja

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and chieftain of Action Democratic Congress (ADC) Peter Obi on Monday held a closed-door meeting in Abuja, as part of ongoing consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, which was not open to the public, was disclosed by the ADC Vanguard, the mobilisation wing of the African Democratic Congress coalition, via posts on its X handle.

It described the engagement as “high-level,” centring on efforts by opposition parties to present a single presidential candidate.

“Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi are having high-level discussions about presenting one presidential candidate for the opposition parties,” the group stated.

Obi was accompanied by a delegation of South-East stakeholders, including Igbo elders, senators of the ADC from the region, and political associates.

The meeting comes amid intensifying consultations by Obi across the country and growing speculation over a possible alliance with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, also a chieftain of the ADC.

It also follows closely on the heels of a national opposition summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where key political figures gathered to deliberate on a unified strategy ahead of 2027.

The summit, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, brought together prominent opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi.

In the Ibadan Declaration issued at the end of the meeting, participants resolved to forge a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress, oppose what they described as moves toward a one-party state, and work towards presenting a consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
