58-year-old Ileogbo born insurance magnate and 2018 Peoples Democratic Party governorship aspirant, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi has returned to the State ahead of the 2022 governorship election.
Ogunbiyi who lost with 7 votes to Ademola Adeleke in the 2018 guber primaries stayed away from the Osun political and social scene after his loss and hasn’t shown any interest in the 2022 governorship election.
Even though Ogunbiyi’s opponent and winner of the PDP 2018 primaries, Senator Adeleke has equally been away from the State, his political structure is however visible owing to different endorsements he has received as a presumptive candidate ahead of next year’s guber election in Osun.
It has been rumoured that Adeleke, whose 2018 candidacy was largely clouded by his eligibility, exam fraud and forgery issues, has just bagged a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from the Atlanta Metropolitan State College.
Adeleke’s latest academic qualification came to bare when a Media Executive, Chief Dele Momodu, posted a congratulatory message on his Twitter account.
Senator Adeleke is expected to return to Osun in July after his graduation to begin consultation and start activities that’ll herald his presumptive bid.
However, with the heavy loss suffered by the Adeleke group in the recent South West PDP Zonal Congress and the possible return of Olasoji Adagunodo as the State Chairman of the party, Ogunbiyi may have been emboldened to stage a return and slug it out with Ademola Adeleke for the PDP ticket.
It is also important to examine the implication of the Osun governorship election on the 2023 presidential election. It is the last election before the presidential election and interested presidential aspirants under the platform of the PDP would use Osun to test the waters.
The Adeleke-Ogunbiyi rivalry may become more heightened when they pitch their tent with touted names for the PDP presidential ticket, Atiku Abubakar and Aminu Tambuwal.
Politics they say is a never ending sequence of permutations and calculations. As the PDP continues in its bid to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Gboyega Oyetola administration is also working round the clock to deliver visible projects that will make his reelection a less challenging one.
