The Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Pensions, Hon. Bamidele Salam, has commended the Governor of Osun State, Alh. Gboyega Oyetola, for the part payment of 1.2billion bonds to pensioners on the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Reacting to the action by the State Governor, Salam stated that “Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s action in making this part payment to our pensioners who are already living under agonizing conditions, gives us hope that his government will do right by these aged citizens who have given their active years to the service of their State.”
“We cannot pretend to be unaware of the plight of our pensioners when they are all around us and we witness their conditions of living everyday. The neglect they have suffered in very recent years even added an emotional dimension to the harsh treatments that they have received in the hands of government. This step by the Governor will however reignite their hopes for a better life”, he said.
While encouraging the Governor to do more and ensure payment of all pension default, Salam, who represents Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, stated that “while the presentation of the 1.2billion bond is laudable, the Governor must keep in mind that there is a long way to go in making life easy for all pensioners in the State.”
“This government must do all within its capacity to achieve prompt payment of Pensions and gratuity to every retiree, whether on the Defined Benefits Scheme or the Contributory Pension Scheme. We must make sure this laudable action leads into several other actions aimed at making life easy for our pensioners.”
Recall that Hon. Salam had recently opened up a Pensions Complaints Portal on his personal website where he has been receiving complaints from pensioners across the country, with the aim of helping as many pensioners as possible resolve all issues that may be delaying their pension payments.
Emphasizing the need for pensioners to be treated with more empathy and responsibility, Hon. Salam stated that every person, knowing that they would someday end up aged and weak, must lend voices to the demand for better treatment of pensioners everywhere. According to him, “the Osun State Governor has shown initial commitment to this course and I hope he continues in this manner.”
