Osun HoA: Owoeye to emerge 7th House Speaker

By Joseph Akanbi

Baring any last minute changes, the current Majority Leader of the Osun State House of Assembly and member representing Ilesha East State Constituency, Hon. Timothy Owoeye, will emerge as Speaker at tomorrow’s maiden plenary of the 7th Osun State House of Assembly.

The 7th House of Assembly is scheduled to be proclaimed tomorrow morning where newly elected members will be sworn in and a leadership election conducted by the Clerk of the House.

The speakership race which had generated a lot of anxiety and ripples was a subject of discussion amidst members of the ruling party within the last few weeks.

The contest which also allegedly caused uproar within the camp of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola and incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Argebesola had reportedly backed his kinsmen, Timothy Owoeye, a loyal party man and experienced legislator while Oyetola allegedly backed Tunde Olatunji, an outspoken and cerebral candidate.

As it is the tradition in the All Progressives Congress (APC) where house leadership positions are determined by the party, Olatunji (Ife North) had in a recent interview denied his ambition, saying the leadership of the party will determine who emerges.

At an enlarged caucus meeting today, the leadership positions were shared with Timothy Owoeye favoured for Speakership, Tunde Olatunji for Chief Whip, Morufu Larry J as Majority Leader.
