Court remands Woman over Alleged Murder

A 23-year-old woman, Jimoh Simiat has been arraigned before an Osun Magistrate court in Osogbo on May 20, 2018 over alleged murder. It was stated that the accused person on February 10, 2018 at about 7:30 at Fountain University area, Osogbo unlawfully fought one Esther Oga to death thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol II Laws of Osun State,  Nigeria 2002.

It was gathered that the accused person came to the house of the deceased; Esther Oga and they both went out.  However, the deceased didn’t come back home that day.  It was later reported that the body of the deceased was found at Fountain University Area.

When questioned, the accused person stated that she went to the house of the deceased to ask her if she really told her new boyfriend that she was a prostitute. She also stated that they rode on the same motorcycle and she told the deceased to call her when she gets home, which she did. Simiat further explained that she spoke with the daughter of the deceased over the phone when she got home. She, therefore, opposed that she was the last person seen with the deceased.

However,  the daughter of the deceased, Elizabeth Jonathan who was present in court testified that Simiat was her mum’s friend and they both went out February 9, 2018. She explained that her mother didn’t return till she was informed of her death. She also disclaimed the statement of the accused person stating that she didn’t speak with the accused person through her mother’s phone like she claims.

The Magistrate, Mr Tunde Badmus stated that the court does not have the jurisdiction to continue with the case and that the accused person should be arraigned before the High Court which has the jurisdiction to handle the case. The plea of the accused person was also not granted due to the magnitude of the case and the offense at stake. The Magistrate further stated that the accused person be remanded in Ilesa prison custody.

The case was adjourned till May 8, 2018.
