A Septuagenarian was on Friday arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly duping the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
The accused, Adewale Murtala, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.
The 71-year-old man was accused of duping the Church’s branch in Osun province of the sum of N1.6 million.
During court sitting, the Prosecutor, Mr. Taiwo Adegoke, told the Magistrate, Mrs Halimatu Bashiru, that the suspect committed the offence in February 2012 at Temidire Estate in Osogbo.
The prosecutor claimed the accused fraudulently obtained N1.6 million from Pastor Alade Samuel for a piece of fake land – claiming that the plot of land bought by the pastor for the Church from the accused person belonged to another person.
According to Adegoke, the offence contravened sections 419 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code cap 34 vol.11 laws of Osun, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, and his Counsel, Mrs Oketade Olufunke, prayed the court to grant bail to the accused with liberal terms.
In her judgement, the Magistrate granted bail to the septuagenarian in the sum of N500,000 and two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate also averred that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, attach an affidavit of means and evidence of tax payment.
She said the sureties must also produce two passport sized photographs, before adjourning the case till December 21, for hearing.
