Ilesa residents lament high cost of accommodation, urge Owa Obokun’s intervention

By Tunde Olamilekan

Residents of Ilesa, Osun State, have appealed to the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, to intervene on the rising cost of accommodation in Ijesaland.

The residents made the appeal following a letter written by a concerned resident on the escalating cost of accommodation in some areas in the town.

In the letter posted on Facebook, the concerned resident named areas like Ido-Ijesa, Imola, Isua,, and Ibodi as the most affected.

“It has come to our collective notice that there are heavy levies on single-room apartments, a significant increase in agent fees, and numerous other inspection charges. This situation is becoming unbearable for many residents and students, particularly parents who are struggling to meet these financial demands, in which some parents will have to borrow loans to make ends meet,” the letter stated.

Citing examples, the letter noted that a single room apartment in Ibodi now goes for ₦150,000, excluding agent fees.

“We respectfully appeal to Your Majesty and our revered elders to intervene and help regulate these costs. The current standard of living is becoming unattainable for the common indigene,” the letter added.

Reacting, a Facebook user, Adekunle Adesoji, said the situation is not limited to the place mentioned in the letter alone, adding that the high cost of house rent affects every area in Ilesa.

He said, “Not only in that area all over the Ilesa metropolis, those dubious people called agents that does not have any work will be charging tenants huge amounts of money for agent fees. Even some landlords collect the agency fee themselves. That is an act of wickedness.
Our Royal Highness should help people look into this very important matter.”

Corroborating Adesoji, another Facebook user, Obadare Raphael, wrote, “Not these areas alone. Cost has skyrocketed in Ilesa entirely. A room and parlor self-contained now costs 250k, 300k, and above, excluding agent fee; this is getting too much in Ilesa.”
