The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has conferred the revered title of Yeye Asiwaju Oodua on the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The monarch conferred the title on the First Lady on Sunday during the 10th Coronation Anniversary of his ascension to the throne.
Speaking during the ceremony, held at Enuwa Square, Ile-Ife, the Ooni described the First Lady as a pillar of support for national unity, women’s empowerment and the preservation of Nigerian cultural values.
He noted that the title recognised her long-standing contributions to social development, education, and the welfare of women and children across the country.
“Yeye Asiwaju Oodua is a title that reflects leadership, service, compassion and commitment to the progress of the Yoruba race and the Nigerian nation at large.
“The First Lady has been a mother since I ascended the throne. Obasanjo spent 16 hours with me in the natural habitat when I was declared Ooni. The first lady has been very nice to everyone, she is indeed a mother.”
In her remarks, Mrs Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Ooni and the entire people of Yorubaland for the honour, describing the title as a call to greater service.
She said, “I receive this honour with humility and a renewed sense of responsibility.
“I will continue to work for the good of our people and the unity and prosperity of our dear nation.”
