One of Nigeria’s foremost banks has announced plans to restore its operations in Ibokun community of Osun State a year after it shut down due to a robbery attack.
The bank’s plan to reopen operations came after a lawmaker refurbished an armoured personnel carrier stationed in the community and handed it over to the police for security purpose.
Respite came to the people of the community in Obokun Local Government Area who bank with a second generation bank, Wema Bank, but have had to travel to other communities to carry out their transactions.
A member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Honourable Bosun Otintiloye, representing Obokun State Constituency, had refurbish the armoured personnel carrier which had been down in a long while and presented it to the community.
It is to be stationed in the town, as part of conditions listed by the bank to relocate back to the town.
The town has been without any bank since last year December after an armed robbery attack on the bank where two people were shot dead and a lot of money carted away.
Responsive Security Challenges
It was jubilation galore as residents trooped out to show appreciation to the lawmaker representing the constituency in the State House of Assembly.
They described the development as laudable, considering the hardship they had faced in attempts to do any bank transaction outside the town.
The traditional ruler of the town, Oba Festus Awogboro, commended the efforts of the state government and the lawmaker towards ensuring security of people’s lives and property.
“In terms of security of communities which is the most important thing for every government to look into, Aregbesola has done well.
“There is peace and harmony in Osun, that is one thing we should understand, despite the fact that hoodlums have been trying.
“So, I want to thank Governor Aregbesola and Honourable Bosun Oyintiloye for this giant stride, because when I told him about the security issue, he promised to brief the Governor and here is the outcome,” the traditional ruler said.
The lawmaker while handing over the armoured personnel carrier to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the town, Mr Durodola Taofeeq, said the reopening of the bank would boost commercial and economic activities in the town in no small measure.
Honourable Oyintiloye said: “We want to be responsive to the security challenges and that is what informed the deployment of this armour carrier to Ibokun community.
“The bank in this community was attacked last year by armed robbers which led to its closure.
“So, to ensure that security is beefed up in the community, my office took it to the state Governor and the CP, which they have done now. This effort will go a long way to provide security in the community”.
Honourable Oyintiloye further stated that it had been in the plan and programmes of the state government to ensure an enabling environment for every business in the State.
