“She is in a relationship”, this among many others is one of the statements that I have always pondered about, funnily I hear such often than not. For all I know, the word “relationship” is an ambiguous word, why people use the word as though it has single meaning is what am beginning to think of, the word with it various meanings fit in for more than one context. The concern at this point is to make obvious the difference between “relationship” and “relationships”, perhaps people will begin to use the word with precisions.
These days, love seems to be the talk of the town and so the word “relationship” becomes a popular term, it’s even February, a month when the word will be mostly used, presumably. Relationship has been Strim – lined, in the sense that people use it to mean only love affairs, that is to express the fact that they in love. It’s high time we remembered that fathers and son is a relationship but a blood line relationship to be precise, Mr A and Miss B can be in a relationship but a friendship one, infact Partnership is a relationship just that it is business oriented. No doubt the word has a meaning that allows one express the state of affair between them and opposite gender notwithstanding we have to pay close attention to its use for the purpose of other context.
It’s a relationship between my parents and me but a kind of parent-child one, imagine how it will sound if as a daughter I tell you ” I am in a relationship with my daddy” without saying any other thing to it, what will your reaction be? At least an average person will ask “what kind of relationship”. There exist more than one relationship, thus we have relationships. You can be in one line of relationship with someone, and not into others, so when such is to be talked about it should be with precision to avoid wrong interpretation by audience or for you not to send a wrong information, either by intent of by default.
Finally, when next you are using the word “Relationships”, use it precisely and correct in its various context. It’s February, a supposed month of love, a month where people precedently celebrate their love ones. I therefore wish us all Happy Valentine and a fun filled love life, enjoy your love relationship and every other relationships you are in and might be.
