Teenager remanded for stealing car batteries

A 17-year-old teenager, Yusuf Oyeniyi, who was reported by neighbors for allegedly stealing car batteries at Abeere area of Osogbo has been arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate Court.

Oyeniyi, who was apprehended on the 3rd of July appeared before the court today on a two- count charge of whistling at odd hours and theft.

The accused as at the time of his arrest was alleged to be in possession of two car batteries worth N100,000.

The Prosecutor, Sergeant Sunday explained that at the time of arrest, other member of the gang fled and all effort to arrest them has proven abortive, he also explained that the parent of the accused has agreed to settle out of court with the owners of the batteries.

After pleading not guilty to the two count charge, the counsel to the accused asked the court for leniency saying the accused is a dullard and an illiterate since he cannot even answer simple questions about himself.

But the magistrate H.B Basiru told the court that the inability of the accused to answer simple questions doesn’t mean he could not commit crime, and that there is an alarming rate at which underage engage in criminal acts these days.

The accused has been remanded and the case adjourned the matter till 5th of October 2017 to allow further investigations.
