Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said that the much coveted Osogbo City Stadium and other stadia in the state would be improved upon before the end of his administration.
He disclosed this while receiving members of the Sport Writers’ Association of Nigeria at the Exco Chamber of Governor’s Office on Tuesday.
Aregbesola, who was inducted as the grand patron of the association, outlined the plans of his administration towards making sporting activities available in every nook and cranny of the state.
It will be recalled that the 10,000 capacity stadium located in the heart of the state capital has been enjoying keen attention from the state governor since the inception of his administration.
However, he is showing any sign of taking his foot off the pedal on the standards of the stadium, with a recent promise of upping the level of its completion.
He assured the sport journalists that, “If and when our facility is completed, you will get the Secretariat you have requested for although it depends on what I would get from the surveyor and the project manager in charge of the stadium. If the stadium can still accommodate the hall you requested, lucky you but if it can’t we would make provision.
“Our wish is to complete the Osogbo Stadium and one or two other stadia in the state before our exit. I have called for a meeting with the consultants in charge of the projects because we want to see how we can have full completion of the stadium.
“We also want to provide sporting facilities throughout the state.”
The Chairman of SWAN in the state, Adeyemi Aboderin, praised the governor for his unalloyed support for sporting activities in the state, noting that Aregbesola would be the first beneficiary of the historic honour.
He added that the association, which paid regular visits to the Osogbo City Stadium, described as one of the many sports facilities under construction in the state, would want to have a 1,000 seater sport resource center within the stadium.
“As part of our contribution to the development of sports, we have it in plan to construct Sports Resource Center in the state, which we hope to locate within the premises of Osogbo City Stadium.
“The Sports Resource Center will comprise a 1,000 capacity conference hall fitted with modern facilities for seminars and workshops for sportsmen and women, coaches and other related personnel. A media center, which will enable sports writers and other journalists to file and send their stories immediately after every events in the stadium. An e-library for sportsmen and women and coaches, as well as sports researchers and a modern gym to assist our athletes grow their potentials.
