Ojo Chieftaincy Tussle: Ruling house kicks against alleged imposition of new monarch

The Odusola Ruling House of Ojo in Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State has urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to uphold fairness and due process in the selection of a new Olojo of Ojo, warning that an alleged plot to impose a candidate may trigger crisis in the town.

The ruling house raised the alarm at a stakeholders’ meeting of Ojo indigenes held in Lagos, where it accused the Onimolodun Ruling House of moves capable of truncating the town’s traditional succession arrangement.

The controversy was triggered by unconfirmed reports that Prince Mike Abiola from Onimolodun Ruling House – the same house that produced the immediate past Oba, Olayinka Gbolagade Tiamiyu – is being prepared for installation as the next Olojo.

The development has reportedly heightened tension in Ojo, with residents expressing fears over possible disruption of commercial activities and communal peace.

The tension had earlier led to a peaceful protest by women in the community on October 17, 2025, led by the Mogaji of Odusola Ruling House, Omo-Oba Abraham Adegoke.

Speaking, the Mogaji, Omo-Oba Abraham Adelabu, faulted the move, noting that Onimolodun held the stool for 34 unbroken years through the late Oba Tiamiyu and should not be allowed to produce his successor.

He explained that under Section 3 of the Chiefs Law of 1955, Ojo has three recognised ruling houses: Adepele, Onimolodun and Odusola.

Tracing the succession history, a community elder listed the recent Olojos as Oba Adegoke Adio (Adepele), Oba Salami Adisa Ige (Onimolodun), Oba Adegoke Alao (Odusola), Oba Samuel Oyeleke Omotoso (Adepele) and Oba Olayinka Gbolagade Tiamiyu (Onimolodun).

Based on this rotation, he argued, it is the turn of Odusola Ruling House to produce the next Olojo.

Corroborating, another family spokesperson, Omo-Oba Olukunle Oyetunji, called on Adepele and Onimolodun ruling houses to embrace mutual respect and allow Odusola to present the next candidate in the interest of peace.

The family appealed to Governor Adeleke to intervene impartially, ensure strict adherence to tradition and the law, and prevent actions capable of causing division in the historic town.
