Alleged defamation: Omirin threatens Accord candidate with ₦500m lawsuit

The legal team of Hon. Emmanuel Olusanya Omirin, member representing Ijesa South Federal Constituency, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Accord Party candidate for the constituency, Alaba Popoola Ibrahim, and Rave FM, Osogbo, over alleged defamatory statements aired on the station’s political programme, Oro Oselu.

The demand was contained in a letter dated October 27, 2026, signed by J.B. Alacy, Esq. and E.V. Akhere, Esq., solicitors to the lawmaker.

According to the lawyers, Popoola, during his appearance on the programme, accused Omirin of intimidating residents with firearms and committing murder after his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC.

The solicitors said the broadcast was recorded, preserved and widely circulated on social media, describing the allegations as false, malicious and capable of damaging Omirin’s reputation and inciting hatred against him ahead of the elections.

They demanded an unconditional public retraction of the statements, a video-recorded apology addressed to Omirin with comparable prominence to the original broadcast, and a written undertaking from Popoola never to repeat the allegations.

They also asked him to preserve and surrender all recordings, transcripts and social media posts relating to the broadcast.

The law firm equally put Rave FM on notice, directing the station to preserve the unedited master recording, pull down the offending broadcast from its online platforms, air the retraction and apology, and grant Omirin a right of reply.

The station was also asked to give written assurance of compliance with the Nigeria Broadcasting Code on fairness and factual accuracy.

The lawyers warned that failure to comply within 48 hours would trigger legal and regulatory actions without further notice.

The actions, according to them, include a N500 million suit at the High Court for aggravated and exemplary damages, public retraction, apology and perpetual injunction, as well as criminal complaints for defamation and cyberstalking.

Other threatened actions include petitions to the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over alleged electoral offences, a formal complaint to the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, against Rave FM, and reports to security agencies over alleged threats to life and public peace.

The solicitors stressed that while their client welcomes robust, issue-based political engagement, he will not condone false accusations of hooliganism and murder.

The letter was addressed to Popoola and the General Manager/Head of Programmes of Rave FM, producers of Oro Oselu.
