Tinubu was not the one who removed subsidy – Prof. Adeyeye

Former federal lawmaker and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Olusola Adeyeye, has said President Bola Tinubu should not be blamed for the removal of fuel subsidy, insisting that the policy had been removed before his assumption of office.

Adeyeye stated this while featuring on Western Spring Television’s Morning Spring programme on Monday.

The former Senator said that the budget inherited by the Tinubu administration did not make provision for subsidy payment.

He explained that while many Nigerians blame the President for the hardship associated with subsidy removal, the reality is that the previous administration had already eliminated subsidy from the budget.

“People are blaming him for removing subsidy, but the fact is that Tinubu was not the one who removed subsidy. Subsidy has been removed before he came into office,” Adeyeye said.

“The budget he inherited does not even have money for subsidy. But Nigerian governments continuously violate the law by implementing budgets outside the provisions of appropriations,” he added.

The former lawmaker noted that President Tinubu took a difficult but necessary decision to stop extra-budgetary spending on subsidy and set the country on a sustainable path.

According to him, the President’s action will create a better future for the next generation.

“Tinubu has done something which will give a trajectory for a better future for our children,” Prof. Adeyeye stated.
