The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, has sympathised with victims of the recent flooding in Osun State, particularly in Osogbo, the state capital.
In a statement on Wednesday, Basiru described the incident as unfortunate, noting the scale of destruction wreaked on homes and businesses.
“My heart goes out to those who have suffered losses from the flood triggered by days of unceasing rainfall. This is not the time to trade blame or play politics with people’s lives and means of livelihood. Nations across the world experience flash floods,” he said.
The APC National Secretary called for collective support for the affected families, stressing the need for solidarity at such a difficult time.
“We should all rise in solidarity with the victims and rally support for them. This is a natural disaster, a global phenomenon that often overwhelms preventive mechanisms even in advanced countries. Yet, we cannot hide behind that and watch people’s fortunes and sweat washed away,” he stated.
Basiru, however, urged the Osun State Government to be proactive in disaster management, especially at the onset of the rainy season.
He advised the government to liaise with dam authorities in adjoining states for timely information on water releases, to allow for dredging of rivers and channelisation of streams ahead of such releases.
