The Osun State House of Assembly on Tuesday considered a Constitution Alteration Bill seeking to establish State Police Services in Nigeria.
The bill was transmitted by the National Assembly to all 36 State Houses of Assembly for deliberation and approval, in line with constitutional amendment procedures.
Presenting the correspondence, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, informed the House that the National Assembly had sought the concurrence of State Legislatures on the proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Hon. Lawrence Adeoti (Ife-South), Hon. Taofeek Olayiwola (Ede-South), Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi (Obokun) and Hon. Jeremiah Awoyeye (Ife-Central), while contributing, said the establishment of State Police would strengthen the nation’s security architecture, particularly at the grassroots, and enhance the capacity of states to respond swiftly to security threats within their jurisdictions.
Following extensive deliberations, the Majority Leader, Hon. Babajide Kofoworola (Ede-North), moved the motion for the House to support the Bill. The motion was seconded by Hon. Tajudeen Adeyemi (Ifelodun).
