Ilesa residents cry out over attack, destruction of farms by mining scavengers

Residents of Ajaka Estate along the Ilesa-Osogbo road in Ilesa, Osun State, have raised the alarm over the destruction of their farms and degradation of their land by alleged mining scavengers.

The residents reportedly said the scavengers carried out a coordinated assault on members of the community when they tried to challenge the illegal activities on their land.

One of the media aides to the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Owa Adesuyi Haastrup, Isaac Haastrup, who posted the news with a video on his Facebook page, said Ajaka Estate is located a few metres from the Akad C Division of the Osun State Police Command.

The residents lamented that the activities of the miners have not only destroyed crops and farmlands but have also left the environment degraded and unsafe for habitation.

They appealed to security agencies, especially the police and relevant government authorities, to urgently intervene and put a stop to the illegal mining activities before the situation escalates.
