Osun police launch manhunt as man shot dead in Osogbo after governor’s palace visit

The Osun State Police Command said it has launched a full-scale investigation into a shooting incident in Osogbo that claimed the life of a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, on Wednesday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, in a statement, said the command received information at about 4:00pm on Wednesday that Yusuf, of Oke-Ayepe area, was shot by suspected hoodlums at Itaolokan area of Osogbo.

The police said preliminary investigation revealed that earlier in the day, Governor Ademola Adeleke, accompanied by his nephew, musician David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, had paid a courtesy visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, at his palace.

The statement said that immediately after the visit, one Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” described as an ex-convict and suspected member of a cult group, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was stopped by members of the security team.

The confrontation reportedly drew other suspected gang members who temporarily blocked the palace entrance before the governor’s convoy left the area safely.

The police said the suspected gang members later departed the vicinity and, while on their way, allegedly shot Tajudeen Yusuf at Itaolokan.

Upon receiving the report, “a police patrol team was mobilised to the scene where the victim was found in a pool of blood. He was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, but was pronounced dead by doctors on duty.”

The Commissioner of Police, Election, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the killing and assured the public that the command is deploying all available resources to identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible.

The command urged anyone with useful information to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through its official channels. Residents were also advised to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
