Traditional rulers in Osun State on Tuesday warned against a repeat of the violent ‘Operation Wetie’ era, demanding a free, fair and peaceful governorship election on August 15, 2026.
The monarchs, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, reached the resolution during a five-hour meeting in Ile-Ife.
Details of the meeting were later shared on Wednesday by the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, who said the royal fathers expressed concern over rising tension and political killings in the state.
The monarchs recalled the 1965 Western Region election crisis, saying it triggered ‘Operation Wetie’, military incursion into politics and the 30-month civil war.
They called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a free, fair, credible and transparent election where “votes of our people count.”
The monarchs also asked the security agencies to be neutral. Protect lives and property and not take sides.
Furthermore, the traditional rulers urged political actors to see their opponents as brothers and also called on electorates to come out peacefully to vote.
