The Osun State government on Wednesday accused the Nigeria Police Force of carrying out a coordinated campaign of intimidation against top government officials, alleging that officers have been invading their residences without proper search warrants.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the government said the latest incident involved the residence of the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, which was allegedly stormed by a team of police officers led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations.
It added that family members of the SSG were taken to unknown locations during the operation, while the SSG himself was attending an INEC stakeholders’ forum.
The government also alleged similar raids at the homes of about six commissioners, including that of the Commissioner for Energy in Ikire, where properties were said to have been destroyed.
The statement further claimed that five other commissioners reported that their residences were either placed under surveillance or forcefully entered despite no illegal activities being found.
It also alleged that several members of the Accord Party are being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Osun State Police Command without being granted bail.
Describing the operations as “an aggravated assault on the government and people of Osun State,” the government accused the Osun State Police Command of abandoning professionalism and acting in the interest of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
It warned that the actions posed a serious threat to democracy and the conduct of free and fair elections in the state.
The government called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Service Commission, the National Security Adviser, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and traditional rulers to intervene and stop what it described as escalating targeted attacks against government officials and Accord Party members.
