Candidates of the Accord Party for the National and State Assemblies in Osun State have accused the Osun State Police Command of harassment and politically motivated arrests of its leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, the Accord candidate for Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency, Hon. Bamidele Salam, who spoke on behalf of the candidates, said the party was alerting President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, INEC, civil society groups and the international community to the trend.
Salam cited the recent arrest of the party’s candidate for Ijesa South Federal Constituency, Mr. Popoola Alaba, and Barrister Olaniyan Sodiq.
The party further rejected reported plans to arrest labour leaders, describing it as “a direct assault on democratic freedoms.”
The Accord candidates called on IGP Olatunji Disu to ensure neutrality of police officers in Osun and urged President Tinubu to direct all security agencies to maintain professionalism before, during and after the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
They demanded the immediate release of Alaba, Olaniyan and others allegedly arrested without lawful basis.
