A Non-Governmental Organisation, World Institute for Peace, has raised the alarm over the alleged release of a suspect in a child defilement case involving a five-year-old girl in Osogbo, Osun State.
The Executive Director of the group, Kamiludeen Lamina, in a Facebook post, said the infant from a poor and vulnerable family was sexually abused by an adult.
The group said it intervened immediately and pursued the case through the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the statement, relevant evidence, including a medical report from the Police Clinic, was obtained, and the suspect was charged to court and remanded in custody.
Lamina said the suspect reportedly fled Osogbo but was rearrested days later by security operatives in the Ejigbo area of the state.
The Institute expressed shock that the suspect was allegedly released from remand without a transparent court proceeding and without the knowledge of the prosecutor or the victim’s parents.
It is demanding answers on how the release was authorised, who facilitated it, and why the victim’s family and prosecutor were not informed.
“This is not merely about one child. It is about the protection of every vulnerable child in our society and the integrity of our justice system,” Omotoyosi said.
“The five-year-old child deserves protection, dignity and justice, not silence, neglect or a system that appears to fail her,” he added.
The organisation vowed to pursue the matter through every lawful means until the truth is revealed and justice is served, insisting that “a child has a right to justice. A child has a right to protection. And we will not rest until justice is done.”
