The Imole Campaign Council has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the Accord Party candidate for Ijesa South Federal Constituency, Popoola Alaba, popularly known as Alabama.
The Council alleged that Alaba and three other Accord members were arrested on Saturday morning by a team of police officers led by one Wemimo, said to be the security aide of Senator Francis Fadahunsi, and taken to the Osun State Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo.
A statement by the Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee of the Imole Campaign Council, Rep. Bamidele Salam, stated that the arrest occurred while Alaba and the others were in a meeting with Accord canvassers.
Salam alleged that the policemen invaded the premises, forcefully took them away and physically assaulted some party members in the process.
The Imole Campaign Council accused Senator Fadahunsi of masterminding the arrest, alleging that the plan was to keep Alaba and other Accord leaders out of circulation until after the elections.
It further alleged that the arrest followed a secret meeting between Senator Fadahunsi, the Osun Commissioner of Police, Mr Ibrahim Gotan, and another senior security officer in the state, where Accord leaders were marked for arrest and unlawful detention.
“We wish to put on record that the Osun State Police Command and its Commissioner, Ibrahim Gotan, will be held accountable if anything untoward happens to Alaba,” the Council stated.
The Council also condemned what it described as the use of the police for political purposes, saying the command under Gotan was busy “running political errands” instead of protecting citizens.
