Governor Ademola Adeleke has raised the alarm over an alleged coordinated plot by the All Progressives Congress to buy voters’ cards and extract PIN numbers ahead of the August 15 election.
The Governor, in a statement on Thursday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said the illegal operation is aimed at compromising the voters register and electronically disenfranchising residents.
Citing reports from across the state’s 30 local governments and Area Office, Adeleke accused APC agents of offering monetary inducements to members of the public to surrender their Permanent Voter Cards. He said the agents are also collecting the PIN numbers on the cards.
According to the governor, “the scheme is targeted at local governments with strong followership of the Accord Party”.
He alleged that the plan is to move registered voters from their original polling units to other towns, making it impossible for them to vote on election day.
The governor further claimed that in some areas, APC agents are asking voters to swear oaths before accepting money or releasing photocopies of their PVCs. He described the practice as criminal and a direct violation of the Electoral Act.
Adeleke called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to urgently intervene, noting that there are indications of “insider collusion” in the alleged operation.
