The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it has identified 385 security flashpoints and 200 areas with difficult terrain ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun, Oluwatoyin Babalola, disclosed this at a security meeting convened by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the South West, Adegoke Fayoade, on Friday.
The meeting, held at the Osun Police Command headquarters in Osogbo, had in attendance heads of security agencies, religious leaders, electoral officials, the media, and the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan.
Giving an update on INEC’s preparations, Babalola said the commission had completed a risk assessment across the state’s 30 local government areas and shared the findings with all security agencies.
“We are currently in our amber zone. We have field officers carrying out ground truthing and risk assessments across the 30 LGAs.
“We identified 385 flashpoints in the state, which have been shared with security agencies. We also identified about 200 difficult terrains that are not motorable and cannot be easily accessed. This is to guide security operations on election day,” she said.
The REC said INEC has also been training staff on peace and safety management, adding that she has visited 29 of the 30 LGAs.
She disclosed that she visited Ila and Ifedayo, areas previously reported for kidnapping, and received assurances from security agencies of peace before, during and after the election.
On logistics, Babalola said INEC had received about 75 per cent of materials needed for the poll. She added that non-statutory materials had already been deployed to their designated locations.
