Governance: LG must be made to function – Basiru

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has called for stronger local government administration, saying Nigeria’s insecurity crisis can only be tackled if governance is taken to the grassroots.

Basiru made the call recently while speaking at an event organised by law students of the University of Abuja.

The APC national scribe said the country is facing serious challenges, with insecurity being the most pressing.

He added that “It is unfortunate that for the past 12 years, in every cycle of election, there will be exacerbation of insecurity.”

Basiru, however, noted that innovations are needed to confront the challenges facing the nation.

The APC scribe identified weak local government administration as a major reason for the security challenges.

According to him, a large proportion of the country remains ungoverned because local councils are not functioning effectively.

“Some of the panaceas that we are looking at are to ensure that governance is taken to the grassroots level. Our local governments must be made to function,” Basiru said.

He urged governors to align with the President’s vision and ensure local governments operate effectively.

Basiru also backed the creation of state police to address rising cases of kidnapping and banditry.
