Osun Senator condemns attack on Accord chairman, urges parties to shun violence

Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Lere Oyewumi, has called on political actors and stakeholders across party lines to shun violence and embrace peaceful democratic engagement, following an attack on the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government, Hon. Asimiyu Ajibola.

Senator Oyewumi, who represents Osun West and is also the Director-General of the Imole Campaign Council, TICC, said the preservation of lives and public order must remain a collective responsibility for all political actors in Osun State.

“Political actors and stakeholders across party lines must shun violence and embrace peaceful democratic engagement. The preservation of lives and the maintenance of public order must remain a collective responsibility. Democracy thrives on debate, not bullets,” Oyewumi said in a statement on Thursday.

The lawmaker strongly condemned the attack on Hon. Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila, and his associates, which occurred at about 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, around Osogbo Community Bank axis of MDS, Osogbo.

According to reports, armed men repeatedly fired at a blue Toyota Corolla conveying the Accord Party chairman and his friends, causing panic among residents and passersby.

He described the incident as “unfortunate, disturbing, and unacceptable in a democratic society,” adding that no individual should be subjected to violence or intimidation on account of political affiliation.

Senator Oyewumi also demanded justice for the late Kolade Eluyera, who was killed a few weeks ago in Ikire. He urged security agencies to “leave no stone unturned” in their investigations.

“The attack, which reportedly has political undertones, makes it imperative for security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further threats to peace and security in Osun State. This unfortunate incident should not be allowed to go uninvestigated,” he said.

The senator urged the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation and ensure that perpetrators and their sponsors are identified and brought to justice.
