The leadership of the Accord in Ijesa South Federal Constituency, has protested against what they described as “incessant harassment, intimidation, bullying and unlawful arrest” of its members allegedly carried out by political hoodlums loyal to the opposition party.
The party described as unacceptable and undemocratic the unjust arrest and harassment of one Mr. Moyiwa Owoeye, popularly known as Elere, alongside other Accord Party leaders in the area.
In a statement signed by chairman of Imole Campaign Council in Ijesa South Federal Constituency, Barr. Dosu Babatunde, the group reiterated that belonging to the Accord Party is not a crime but a constitutional and democratic right guaranteed to every Nigerian citizen.
Babatunde, therefore demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all arrested party members.
The statement noted that the protesters moved to the Palace of the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, where they sought the intervention of the revered monarch over the growing political intimidation in the constituency and the unlawful detention of innocent Accord Party members.
“At the palace, the delegation was received by notable chiefs representing the Owa-in-Council, including High Chief Sakariyu Fapohunda, the Ògbóni of Ilesa; High Chief Makanjuola Afolabi, the Odole of Ilesa; Loja Bode Owofade, the Elumelu of Imelu; and High Chief Gbenga Igbaroola, the Arapate of Ilesa.
“Speaking on behalf of the Owa, the chiefs assured the protesters that Kabiyesi remains committed to peace, unity and political harmony in Ijesaland. They further disclosed that the monarch has already initiated efforts to engage all concerned groups and stakeholders in order to restore calm and prevent further escalation of political violence and intimidation.
“The chiefs equally warned that anyone found perpetuating criminal acts capable of disrupting the peace of Ijesaland would face both legal consequences and the wrath of the gods,” the statement added.
