Mercy Aigbe marks 20 years in Nollywood

Mercy Aigbe has opened up about her early days in Nollywood, reflecting on how her career started 20 years ago.

In a throwback movie clip shared on Instagram, the 48-year-old film star revealed that her breakout moment came from the movie ‘Ara’.

The clip shows her playing a young girl who had just returned from abroad, complete with a distinct accent.

“This was the moment that introduced me to world…Well over 20 years later, I’m still here, still evolving, still walking in purpose, still becoming,” she captioned the post.

“God did it…and he’s still doing it. Did you this movie back then?”

Aigbe began her acting career with appearances in soap operas, including the popular TV drama series ‘Papa Ajasco’.

She fully entered Nollywood in 2006 and gained widespread recognition after starring in ‘Ara,’ a movie produced by Remi Olupo in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Since then, she has featured in numerous Yoruba and English films, including ‘Thinline,’ ‘Ajosepo,’ ‘Ada Omo Daddy,’ ‘Eri Ife,’ and ‘Afefeyeye’.

Beyond her acting career, Aigbe’s personal life has also drawn public attention.

In January 2022, she introduced Kazim Adeoti as her husband, a revelation that was met with public accusations from the filmmaker’s first wife who claimed Aigbe had destroyed her marriage.

In 2023, Aigbe converted from Christianity to Islam, stating that her love for Adeoti prompted her to reconsider her religious beliefs.
