The lawmaker representing Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency, Hon Bamidele Salam, has called for government support for farmers in the country.
Salam, during plenary at the House of Representatives on Wednesday, moved a motion to ask the government to urgently support farmers by off-taking their produce and putting other mechanisms in place to support them.
He stated that government support is necessary following the outcry of the farmers on the drastic fall in prices of farm produce.
The motion by Salam was seconded by the House of Representatives member representing Tsafe/Gusau Federal Constituency, Zamfara State, Hon. Kabiru Mai Palace.
The lawmaker said, “A few days ago, I was in conversation with some of my constituents who are into farming. They told me how a drastic fall in the prices of farm produce has terribly impacted many farmers, who could not recover even the basic cost of their farm inputs, talk less of making a profit. The most impacted, according to them were Cassava, maize and rice farmers.
“Today, on the floor of the House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria, I moved a motion to ask that the Government urgently move to support these farmers by taking their produce and putting other mechanisms in place to support them in these trying times.
“The motion was seconded by my Colleague from Zamfara state, Rep. Kabiru Mai Palace and unanimously passed by the House.”
