2027: Handpicking candidates may not bode well for Osun APC – Basiru to party leadership

•Seeks level playing ground for all aspirants

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Ajibola Basiru has urged the leadership of the party in Osun State to provide a level-playing ground for all aspirants ahead of primaries into the 2027 elective posts.

Basiru who is the initiator of ‘Alubarika Movement’ reportedly made the call on Saturday in Osogbo at the official launch and flag of identity cards for members of the Movement across the State.

The former Senate spokesperson warned that handpicking candidates where there are many aspirants may not bode well for the chances of the party in the elections, calling for free and fair primaries.

“Let standard bearers for the position of the House of Assembly, House of Representatives and the Senate emerge through free and fair primaries. We should have winners and runners-up emerging fairly. It’s in that light that we can hold the party together.

“In addition, from the units, wards to local and constituencies, we must present credible aspirants. We shouldn’t use sentiments to pick those who will hoist our party’s banners in the coming elections,” he noted.

Dr Ajibola Basiru also disclosed that the Alubarika Movement is ready to work for the victory of the APC in the August 2026 governorship election and charged members of the party to go all out for the APC’s victory.

“Electoral victory is not given ala carte. We will work for it. I want to charge our party to see the August election as a serious business if our party must reclaim the State and return it to the Progressive fold. I want to appeal to whoever is still nurturing ill feelings to bury the hatchet and unite with the party’s structure.”

The APC national scribe lauded members of Alubarika Movement for standing firm with the group despite his decision to withdraw from the Governorship race.

He said, “I appreciate your resolve to stand by me. I thumb up for the Alubarika Movement management team, Stakeholders and Team leads across all the local governments for holding this structure together. I assure that all members will benefit through various programmes.”

The chairman of Alubarika Movement, Alhaji Kehinde Olamolu, in his remarks, said the purpose of the identity cards is to identify members and have data base for each member.

He charged members to go to their wards and units to recruit more members into the movement.

Olamolu commended Basiru for being a man of his word and lauded him for always prioritising the welfare of members of the movement.
