The National Chairman of the Odua Peoples’ Congress, Chief Gani Adams, has predicated that the multifaceted problems militating the country could not be overcame by President Muhammadu Buhari, except the system of government the country is operating is changed.
He said ever since Nigeria dropped Regionalism for Federalism in 1966, things have not been easy with the country.
He said this in an interview with newsmen on the sidelines of the Cultural Day organised by the Yoruba Broadcasters Association in Osun State.
According to the OPC boss, we need to go back to regionalism or true federalism if we want to taste development in this country. Nigeria of today is worse under Buhari than under Jonathan. It is not Buhari’s fault but the system of government we are using does not befit us.
He said, “there will be economic corporation and there will be peaceful coexistence. For instance, Lagos has the money, while other States have the natural resources that can create wealth for us if we were to be a region.
“We have so many things to gain from, Ekiti state is rich in agriculture and now they have discovered 18 carat gold. Osun has 24 carat gold. Lagos state now have the second largest crude oil deposit in the world.
“Buhari promised to give unemployed youths 5,000 naira monthly when he ascended office. Up till this moment he is yet to do so and we call ourselves the largest economy in Africa, when every new born baby in South Africa is entitled to 1,500 rands, which is equivalent to 56,000 naira. And they are still giving it till today.
On the issue of some 27 States that have found it difficult to pay their workers salaries, Gani Adams said only regionalism could help bring an end to the menace.
He also bemoaned the state of the country’s economy, saying nowadays inmates don’t want to leave the prisons they have been remanded in due to some basic amenities they enjoy.
“They will tell you they can’t leave the prison because if the water stops they will protest and it will be repaired. They will tell you they are living in free apartment and free food, which is not so outside the prison because the situation has gone worse, ” he said.
