A group of students in the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, have given a stern warning to the governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, to abscond his planned visit to the institution to deliver a lecture, or risk ’embarrassment’ from the students.
In a release by some concerned students of the school, which was made available to our reporter on Monday, Aregbesola’s visit was billed for Thursday, November 4th, 2016, to deliver a lecture on ‘Improving Nigeria’s economy through diversification’.
Bothered by the antecedents of Aregbesola, the students threatened to treat the governor the same way other erratic visitors were treated if he turned deaf ears.
According to them, ” it is an irony for such an individual who is an oppressor per excellence to be invited to give a lecture on any progressive issue. It is beyond his jurisdiction. It could have been perfect if the lecture is tagged “How to oppress the masses” or “How not to pay workers’ salaries”. Then, Aregbesola can be seen to be an authority on such an issue.
“I wonder whether he is coming to OAU to lecture us on how to employ graduates to sweep and cut grasses to be paid peanuts of N8,000 naira. What a heartless man!
“Historically, someone like Aregbesola would never even propose to step on the soil of Great Ife. In 2014, some months preceeding the Presidential elections, Goodluck Jonathan, the then President came to Obafemi Awolowo University. Despite the fact that the then Ibikunle-led Students Union Leadership failed to understand the need to meet the president for a mass protest stating our demands, students mobilized themselves to meet the President and he was duly embarrassed on campus. Then, it sent a signal to corrupt politicians that Great Ife Students would never adore them.
“Last year, Senator Babajide Omoworare attempted to come to OAU to deliver a lecture just like Aregbesola. He was warned that his presence on campus would only lead to his embarrassment. Well, he was smart enough to yield the warnings from students and he evaded the program tactically. Ribadu, Obasanjo and other politicians cum oppressors had their field day with Great Ife students and the proposed visit of Aregbesola would not be an exception.”
