The Executive Director World Institute for Peace, Lamina Kamiludeen, had urged the All Progressives Congress gubernatorial candidate in Osun State, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, to ensure that the author of a statement which claimed three people died at his residence is arrested and prosecuted.
The activist equally said there is a need for political leaders to organise orientation programs for their followers on social media–related crimes such as cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and defamation of character, particularly the reckless spread of unverified information.
He stated this in reaction to the event that trailed the arrest of Mr Monsuru Iyiola, an aide to Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Iyiola was arrested for sharing the statement, which claimed three people died at Oyebamiji’s residence during a prayer session.
Kamiludeen in a statement on Saturday, berated those condemning Iyiola’s arrest, noting that the Peoples Democratic Party had in the past arrested some members of the opposition
over allegations of cyberbullying or cyberstalking.
He said, “I call on Alhaji Bola Oyebamiji to ensure that the individual who originally posted the false and damaging information is arrested and properly prosecuted.
“Let the law take its full course so that it serves as a warning to others. I also urge the security agencies in Osun State to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation into this matter.”
“Meanwhile, anyone who celebrated the arrest and remand of Oluwasegun Ajibola Fawale in Ilesha by Osun PDP leader(s) over allegations of cyberbullying or cyberstalking, and also praised the same PDP leader(s) when Rasaq Dolapo Gafar was arrested and taken to a correctional centre in Ibadan for a similar offence, has no moral standing to condemn the APC for arresting my friend over the same issue.
“You cannot applaud injustice today and cry foul tomorrow simply because party lines have changed. This level of hypocrisy is unacceptable. E stop abosi, ko dara rara,” Kamiludeen added.
