Oluwo advocates unity, tolerance among ethnic groups

By Tunde Olamilekan

Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi has called for understanding and tolerance amongst various ethnic groups in Nigeria.

The monarch noted that being born into a particular tribe is an exclusive work of God and not an individual choice.

Oba Akanbi made the call on Thursday in Lagos during the unveiled of a book, “Diary Of An Audacious Reformer” written in honour of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Oluwo also sought the police’s cooperation against what he described as barbaric cultural practices, such as unconstitutional restriction of human movements under the dictate of cultural festivals and secret societies.

He commended Egbetokun for his reformative approach to strengthening the security architecture of Nigeria.

The monarch said, “I am a Yoruba. I didn’t choose to be a Yoruba. So also are Ibo, Fulani and Hausa. The tribe we belong to is not by choice but by God. Let’s see one another as one to build a more united entity.

“My monarchical teachings centre on emancipation of the black race from mental slavery and cultural bondage. The old dark days of restricting people’s movement under certain cultural rites are gone forever in my kingdom, Iwo. I didn’t allow that. Also, you cannot place a sacrifice at junctions in Iwo because every day is our sanitation”.
