OAU students threaten showdown over poor lecture conditions

By Tunde Olamilekan

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have lamented the deplorable conditions of their lecture halls.

The Great Ife Students Union in a letter to the management of the institution, said the lecture halls have become death traps.

The letter, which was signed by the welfare officer or the students’ body, Shuaib-Osunleke Musiab, said the lecture hall conditions are no longer palatable for the students.

The union stated that two students collapsed in the lecture hall last week due to overpopulation and poor ventilation in the classroom.

“This incident is not an isolated event. For weeks, students have endured token classrooms where the number of occupants far exceeds fire‑safety limits, where windows remain shut, and where the stench of sweat and stale air is a constant reminder that our learning environment is being sacrificed on the altar of administrative apathy,” the letter noted.

The students’ union demanded, among others, that the school management conduct a full audit of all lecture theatres and classrooms, and enforce occupancy caps.

The students also said all affected classrooms must be fitted with functional fans or air‑conditioning units before the next lecture cycle.

They also demanded that “a first‑aid box must be stationed at every high-capacity lecture theatre.”

The student union, however, warned that it would not hesitate to mobilise for a campus‑wide sit‑in if the school management failed to meet its demands.

“Should these demands not be met within a reasonable time frame, we will mobilise a campus‑wide sit‑in, initiate a formal grievance with the National Universities Commission, and pursue all legal avenues available to protect student welfare,” the letter added.
