The House of Representatives has demanded the urgent completion of the long-neglected Armed Forces Nigeria Physical and Health School and Games Village in Esa-Oke, Osun State.
The abandoned project was initiated by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Defence to enhance the fitness and readiness of Nigerian troops.
The lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Oluwole Oke, had, during plenary on Thursday, moved a motion for the completion of the project.
Oke expressed deep concern that despite budgetary allocations since 2008, the project remains largely abandoned, denying both the Armed Forces and local communities the expected benefits.
He noted that the facility, modelled after the United States Army Physical Training School in South Carolina, was intended to provide modern training resources to strengthen the physical and mental preparedness of military personnel.
The lawmaker also highlighted that the school’s completion would create jobs, improve local security, and engage youth populations in Esa-Oke and neighboring areas of Osun and Ekiti states.
“The abandoned school has become a hideout for criminals, causing hardship for the people of Osun and Ekiti States. Immediate intervention is necessary before the situation worsens,” Oke said.
Adopting the motion, the House directed the Chief of Defence Staff to deploy personnel to secure the site and commence preliminary work.
It also urged the Office of the Accountant-General and the Ministry of Finance to release the funds allocated in the current budget.
Additionally, the House mandated the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Budget Office, and the National Planning Commission to ensure adequate provisions for the project in the 2026 budget. Its Committees on Defence and Legislative Compliance were instructed to investigate the non-implementation of past budgetary allocations and submit a report within four weeks for further legislative action.
