Gunshot bill will save lives – Osun lawmaker, Awoyeye

By Tunde Olamilekan

The lawmaker representing Ife Central at the Osun State House of Assembly, Abiola Awoyeye, has disclosed that the recently passed Osun State Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Bill will save lives and protect hospitals from dangers.

Awoyeye said he sponsored the bill to ensure that victims of gunshot wounds across the state receive prompt medical attention, with or without a police report and initial deposit.

According to him, the bill, when assented to by Governor Ademola Adeleke, will also protect health workers and hospitals from harassment or intimidation while performing their duties.

He said, “The bill seeks to bring an end to the rejection of gunshot victims in the state. The legislation marks a major step in promoting public safety and upholding the sanctity of human life, as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“A life-saving framework designed to remove needless bureaucracy in emergency medical response.

“Every human life, regardless of the circumstances, deserves a fair chance to survive. That is the spirit behind this bill”.
