The immediate past Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye has decried the state of Osun Amotekun, noting that the security outfit has strayed from its core purpose.
Owoeye was reacting to the latest incident involving Osun Amotekun whose personnel shot four people dead in Akinlalu, a community in Ife-North Local Government Area of the state.
The former lawmaker noted that the present Amotekun is throwing into the bin all the efforts made in its formation.
Owoeye reminisced about the frequent trips and sleepless night the team from Osun made to Ibadan during the formative stage of the bill, which eventually became law that gave birth to the security outfit.
He added that Amotekun under the current administration has now become a tool of harassment, adding that bar was extremely lowered during the recruitment exercise by this administration.
He said, “It is a big shame of what Amotekun has turned into in Osun. This is not how it was before and I hope things will change drastically.
“The Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), also known as Operation Amotekun became a necessity amid rising concerns over insecurity. The mainstream security outfits had not been forthcoming in arresting the situation, It was in the context of the unfortunate development that we lost the daughter of Pa Rueben Fasanranti, the leader of Afenifere among others issues that could have led to breakdown of law and order.”
“Thinking of our sleepless nights and travels to Ibadan during the formative stage of the bill and the efforts to make it a law, it breaks my heart to see what has become of the current Amotekun in Osun.
“Information arising that cultists were recruited by the current administration has made mockery our efforts and also affirm fears in certain quarters that Nigeria may not be ripe for State Police due to the inability of government at the sub-national to play by the rules.”
