Mixed reactions trail Osun Govt’s directive on textbooks

Mixed reactions have trailed the banning of graduation ceremonies for kindergarten, nursery, and Junior secondary school (JSS 3) students in Osun State.

osun.life reported that the Osun State Ministry of Education, on Friday, issued a circular banning the graduation ceremonies.

The circular signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Murtala Jimoh, also banned the writing of classwork and homework inside textbooks.

The circular reads in parts, “Consequently, graduation ceremonies and parties are only permitted for: Primary 6 graduating pupils and Senior secondary schools SSS3 students.

“This policy aims to ensure that students, parents, guardians, and stakeholders and
schools focus on the academic achievements of students at the end of their primary and secondary education cycles.

“In addition, the use of workbook inside the textbook should stop henceforth to ensure that the textbook is not only for a session.”

Meanwhile, people have taken to social media to react to the latest development.

While some residents were lauding the state government for the policy, others said it came late considering students are resuming on Monday, September 22.

Commenting on the news, a Facebook user, Opesan Anthony, urged the state government to ensure proper implementation.

He wrote “At last…… It’s a very, very welcome development and a good idea… It’s not just about BANNING. There should be proper IMPLEMENTATION & MONITORING.
Moreover, it will be more meaningful and appreciated, if Private and Public schools can use the same TEXTBOOKS from Primary schools to Secondary schools…..
Kudos to you Sir.”

Adegboyega Temidire, while reacting to the news, said, “At last parents were let out of the proprietor’s hook, imagine buying textbooks every year without being the junior ones able to use them. Terrible.”

However, Christian Emeka, said the policy will only lead to high cost of textbooks and graduation fees.

He wrote, “Now the only class that will be doing graduation is Pry 6 and SSS3, the amount for graduation will be costly. The textbook for 3 years will be accepted, since it’s 3 3-year interval, the cost too will be high.”

Also, Tony Jonah, said the state government should have come up with the policy long time ago, noting that schools have already purchased textbooks to be used by students for the upcoming term.

“It seems to be late as schools have already purchased books and set for academic activities,” he said.
