Festus Ogun Demands Full List of Beneficiaries Amid FG’s ₦330bn Cash Transfer Claim to 8.1m Households

Human rights lawyer, Festus Ogun, has announced plans to petition the Federal Government next week, demanding the full list of 8.1 million households the government claimed benefited from its ₦25,000 cash transfer scheme.

Ogun disclosed his plan in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

“My lawyers will do a small FOI next week demanding for the names of the 8.1m households that benefit from the ‘cash transfer” he said.

His statement comes after the Federal Government announced that it had disbursed ₦330bn to 8.1 million households nationwide under the National Social Safety Net Programme.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja after a review meeting of the Special Presidential Panel on Social Investment.

Edun explained that the payments were aimed at cushioning the impact of ongoing economic reforms and were made possible after the integration of National Identification Numbers (NINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to eliminate fraud and political interference.

According to official figures, the programme has already reached 8.1 million households out of the 19.7 million listed in the National Social Register, with further payments expected before the end of the year.

Ogun’s planned petition is expected to test the government’s transparency claims, as critics have repeatedly questioned the credibility of the disbursement figures and the availability of verifiable beneficiary data.
