Nigerian leaders not different from colonial masters – Prof Alao

The Vice Chancellor of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, Professor Dayo Alao has expressed worry that Nigeria’s leaders in the past and present are just a replica of the colonial masters who exploited and impoverished Africans nations.

Alao who is a Professor of Mass Communication was the Special Guest on the “News Point”, a programme organised by the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Osogbo, Osun State on Tuesday where he posited that Nigerian politicians are too greedy and wasteful.

He lamented that the current recession in the country was due to negligence on the part of the leaders who failed to plan well for the nation because of their self-aggrandisement.

Alao who was a General Manager of defunct Daily Times newspapers said that the time has come for those at the helms of affairs in the country to maximize the natural resources that God blessed Nigeria with, particularly in agriculture.

He said a lot of natural resources are wasting away in Nigeria and charged the federal government to ensure that the natural resources are well exploited to boost the nation’s economy.

His words “Owing to the crude oil which used to be the mainstay of the economy, we forgot our groundnut pyramid, cocoa and cotton that God has blessed us with. But it’s unfortunate that oil money is no more. We have overslept,” he said.

“To get out of the present economic mess which has made life difficult for us, the Federal Government has to be proactive by encouraging everybody to be productive, especially those in the rural areas who have access to land and engage in agriculture.

“There are a lot of agricultural produces that must be exploited which can help boost our export profile. It is high time people stop starching money away in foreign accounts but plug it into useful economic ventures,” he added.
