Osun Govt charges food vendors on serving sweet potato in school meals

The Osun Government on Thursday charged food vendors under the Osun School Feeding Programme (O’MEAL) to include orange-fleshed sweet potato in the meals being prepared for pupils for improved diet.

Mrs Olubunmi Ayoola, State Programme Officer of Osun Elementary School Feeding and Health Programme, gave the charge in Osogbo at a stakeholders’ workshop organised to emphasise the nutritional value of orange-flesh sweet potato.

Ayoola said it was important for all food vendors to learn how best to prepare the potato since it was found in abundance in the state.

Also speaking at the workshop, Mrs Bimpe Adedeji, a health officer, highlighted the nutritional value of the orange-flesh sweet potato.

Adedeji said that the sweet potato was rich in vitamin A which helps to improve vision, build immunity and help children grow well.

“The potato is good for both the young and old people,” she said.

Mr Rasaq Adeleke, an O’MEAL Officer, said the state government was also encouraging farmers and cadets of the Osun Youths Employment Scheme (O-yes) to plant the orange-flesh sweet potato specie, which is available in the state for general consumption.

Participants at the workshop include; food vendors, state planning officers, head teachers, health officers and parents teachers association representatives.

Highlights of the event included the demonstration of the best way to cook the orange-fleshed sweet potato.
