The duo of All Progressives Congress Senators from Osun State, Adelare Oriolowo and Ajibola Basiru of Osun West and Osun Central respectively were among the 69 chairmen the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, announced as Chairman of Senate standing committees.
The announcement came immediately after yesterday’s approval and confirmation of the 43 ministerial nominees sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the upper chamber.
The two senators despite being first-timers landed very sensitive committees which would no doubt make them relevant in the 9th Senate.
Senator Adelere Oriolowo was given Chairman, Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance, a position which was last held by the immediate past Senator for Osun East, Senator Babajide Omoworare.
Besides being a Chairman, Adelere Oriolowo is to also serve as Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation and Solid Minerals, Mine, Steel Development and Metallurgy
On his part, Senator Ajibola Basiru would Chair the Senate Committee on Diaspora, NGO, and Civil Societies, where he is expected to be protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad and relate with the NGOs and civil societies.
The only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator from Osun State, Senator Francis Fadahunsi from Osun East was given Vice Chairman, Customs, Excise, and Tariffs. Fadahunsi, a retired Assistant Comptroller General of Customs who was initially favoured for the Chairmanship seat was made to settle for Vice – Chairman.
