OAU, students disagree as student slumps, dies

The Management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, and students of the institution on Saturday disagreed on the circumstances surrounding the death of a part three student of Microbiology in the university, Kayode Omotola.

It was learnt, slumped during a football match between fresh students of the department and the old students.

Some of the students, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, alleged that poor services at the institution’s health centre led to the student’s death.

A classmate of the deceased, who identified himself as Victor, who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH, explained that barely 20 minutes into the football match, held at the OAU Sports Complex on Friday, Omotola suddenly started experiencing difficulty in breathing.

Victor said, “The match started around 9.15am. There was no physical contact between him and another player. He just slumped. He was quickly rushed to the OAU health centre. He gave up the ghost about four minutes after he was rushed there.

“The insinuation that Omotola died before getting to health centre was incorrect. He was even given something like a drip (intravenous fluid). He wasn’t attended to properly. He needed oxygen at that particular moment, but I think it was not available.”

However, the school management, in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, said, “One of our students, a part three student in the Department of Microbiology, Omotola, Akorede Kayode, died suddenly on Friday, May 17, 2019.”

Olanrewaju explained that the student was playing football with his colleagues when he suddenly slumped.
