The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) South West Zone D has condemned the arrest of a graduate of the defunct Osun State College of Education, now transitioned into University of Ilesa), Temitope Adedoyin by the management of UNILESA, for protesting his prolonged exclusion from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation list.
The university had in a statement on Wednesday through its Registrar, Funso Ojo, said it invited the police to arrest Adedoyin after he attempted to lock the institution’s Senate Building.
However, NANS Zone D Coordinator, Comrade Josiah Adeyemo, in a statement on Thursday, a copy obtained in Osogbo, claimed that Adedoyin was denied mobilisation for over two years despite having been issued a notification of results and an official confirmation of his eligibility for NYSC.
Adeyemo described the development as deliberate, unjust and a denial of citizens’ rights and future.
“More disturbing is the undeniable act of brutality carried out against this student when he peacefully visited the institution to demand answers and assert his rights.
“In a shocking abuse of authority, the Vice-Chancellor directed security personnel to physically assault the student. He was beaten openly, in broad daylight, and sustained serious injuries. This is a direct violation of human dignity and a disgrace to the sanctity of an academic institution,” the statement noted.
Adeyemo demanded the immediate mobilisation of Adedoyin for NYSC, warning that failure to do so would lead to a mass protest against the institution.
“We will not hesitate to mobilise students across the Southwest region to lawfully and persistently occupy the institution with continuous mass actions and protests until justice is served and accountability is achieved,” he added.
