The Deputy Senate Minority leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi, has called for an immediate federal Intervention over the devastating downpour which occurred in Osogbo, Osun State capital last Saturday.
The lawmaker who represents Osun West raised urgent prayers during plenary on Tuesday.
osun.life reports that millions of properties were lost, residents displaced while a woman was confirmed dead after the devastating downpour.
According to a statement from his media office, Oyewumi during the plenary, urged the senate to call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant federal agencies to swiftly collaborate with the Osun State Government to assist the victims.
In his presentation, the Senator expressed deep concern over the catastrophic impact of the incident, which has so far claimed two lives, left over one hundred residents injured and currently receiving medical attention, and resulted in widespread destruction of homes, markets, shops, and critical public infrastructure.
The Senator advocated the development and implementation of sustainable, long-term solutions to address recurring incidents of windstorms, heavy rainfall, and other environmental challenges in the affected areas.
He stressed the importance of proactive measures such as improved drainage systems, urban planning reforms, and effective disaster preparedness strategies.
