The Osun State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has warned members of the Tipper Association to desist from excavating sand and laterite under the Right of Way (ROW) of facilities belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
The command noted that such activities posed a serious threat to critical national infrastructure and the stability of the national grid.
A statement by the command spokesperson, Kehinde Adeleke, a copy obtained by osun.life, said the state Commandant, CC Igbalawole Sotiyo, issued the warning during a meeting with the executives of the Tipper association.
Addressing the delegation, Commandant Sotiyo expressed serious concern over the growing practice of sand and laterite excavation beneath high transmission lines, warning that such activities could weaken the structural base of transmission towers and ultimately compromise their stability.
He stressed that if the practice is not halted immediately, it could lead to the collapse of transmission towers, disrupt electricity supply, and negatively impact the national grid, with far-reaching consequences for national development and public safety.
The Commandant therefore called on members of the Association to strictly comply with regulations guiding mining and excavation activities, particularly around the right-of-way of power transmission facilities, urging them to also serve as watchdogs by reporting illegal operators engaged in such dangerous acts.
Responding, the state Chairman of the Tipper Association, Mr Ogungo Samson, appreciated the command for the engagement and pledged the association’s full cooperation.
He assured the commandant that the association would work closely with the command to identify and expose criminal elements involved in illegal sand excavation under transmission lines.
