The Taminu-Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has condemned the defection of 25 House of Assembly lawmakers elected under the party to the Accord Party in the state.
In a statement, the factional caretaker Secretary of the party in Osun, Seyi Bamidele, described the defection as
deeply disappointing and politically unjustifiable.
The statement said Osun PDP remains undeterred, adding that the party is bigger than any individual ambition.
“As a democratic institution, the PDP recognises that freedom of association is a constitutional right, and the lawmakers are legally entitled to make their political choices.
“However, the party considers this decision deeply disappointing and politically unjustifiable. The PDP provided the platform, structure, and goodwill through which these lawmakers secured electoral victories and earned the mandate of their constituents. To abandon that mandate and the party that nurtured their political rise at a moment of internal challenges raises serious questions about political consistency, loyalty, and ideological conviction.
“Defection under such circumstances does little to strengthen democratic culture. Rather, it undermines the sanctity of party ideology and the trust reposed in elected representatives by the electorate under a specific political platform.
“Nevertheless, the Osun PDP remains undeterred. Our party is bigger than any individual ambition, and our structures across the state remain intact, vibrant, and committed to the collective aspiration of the people of Osun State. The ongoing efforts to reposition and strengthen the party will continue with renewed determination,” Bamidele stated.
The statement urged supporters, and stakeholders of the party to remain steadfast, and focused, adding that, “This moment should serve as a reminder that political movements are tested not in times of comfort but in periods of challenge. The PDP in Osun remains united and confident that the future holds greater opportunities for consolidation and electoral success.”
“History and posterity will always stand as impartial judges of political actions. The PDP, as a party founded on democratic ideals, will continue to uphold its principles and work tirelessly in the interest of the people of Osun State,” the statement concluded.
